What to Expect

Maybe you have never engaged the services of a psychotherapist. Or perhaps you’re looking for a new counselor who is better attuned to your needs.

Let me take a moment to give you a better idea of how I work with clients. After all, no two therapists practice exactly the same way. The more you know in advance about my approach, the more informed decisions you’ll make, and the readier you’ll be to make rapid progress in reaching your goals.

At the first session I’ll ask you lots of questions – about your history, your family, your current situation – and you’ll give me lots of information to work with. It’s my job to sort through it all.

Some people walk into my office knowing exactly what their issues are and what actions they need to take. They are in the minority. If you’re like most people, I’ll help you figure out what details are relevant, and what to focus on.

The length of this process is up to you. We’ll work together to reach goals we’ve established together. It takes only as long as you need to get there. We’re done when you feel you’ve accomplished what you set out to do. You’ll decide – and you’ll know.

We’ll look back, but not at the expense of moving forward. Many people believe that therapy is all about delving into the past (maybe because, for some therapists, it is).

I believe the experiences that shaped you are important, but only insofar as they provide insight into how we make changes now. It’s like driving a car: the rear view mirror is essential, but you won’t get anywhere if you don’t focus on the road ahead.

There will be no unnecessary drama. Some therapists create “drama,” using flamboyant techniques, processes, props, etc. That is not my style. Some of that can get confusing, intimidating, and even embarrassing for the client. I believe that direct, straightforward dialogue is the most effective tool a therapist can use.

You’ll deal only with me – no office staff to get past, nobody else to explain things to. Any questions you have, any billing or scheduling issues, I’ll be the one to help you. When you call you’ll either get me or my voice mail. I like to keep it simple and easy for both of us.
